“I got the money…”
For those of you on facebook, you have been wondering why do I always end the day by saying, “I’ve got the money.” As always, there is a story involved.
Earlier this year, legendary afternoon host on WCCO Radio in the Twin Cities, Steve Cannon, lost his bought with cancer at the age of 81. He hosted the afternoon drive from 1971 until 1997 when he retired. He always ended his show along the lines of “See you tomorrow, the good Lord willing, I’ve got the money.” He also did over his closing theme shong, “The Groove” by Rodney Franklin. I thought it was cool, so I started using it for my slefish purposes.
I cannot do justice to how the show operated, so checkout these airchecks (audio recordings for non broadcast people) at radiotapes.com.
Holy Writ…
OK, so I figured since I already dished a number of unholy words at Comcast, I would talk about some holy words that came up a while back at work, and how people believe that somethings are holier than others and should be left alone.
We were in the midst of a fund raising campaign at work when someone called to ask if the organization was sending the King James Bible overseas. As if any other version of the Bible was giving a deviant message than the King James Version. For the record, in addition to the King James Version, I also have an Amplified Bible and a Living Bible, which brings super duper clarity when I could not decifer the King James version of the passage right away (which is rare because…come on, you guys know I can right, errr….write.
After we handled the call, then my co-worker started to talk about her time as a DJ during the Christian skate session at the roller rink. She said that she would hear some complaints about her musical choices because, to summarize stuff, they were too contemporary, euphemism for they were put to evil rhythms. You know it’s the drum beat of the song. If a drum beat is the deciding factor between a good and evil Christian song, then that means that every Black church in America is in trouble, especially during a praise break.
In particular with the Bible, I feel inclined to ask this question…does it really matter what version of the Bible you prefer? Sounds like a stupid or foolish question I know but work with me. Not everyone can take on King James right away, they might need a different version before they can make it to the King James Version. There is a reason why we have different versions of the Bible like the Living and the Amplified and so on.
Don’t do not mistake me. The King James is the gold standard as far as Bible translations. But I think that anyone who believes that the King James Version is the only version that matters, they are limiting the Gospel. It has been clear that the Gospel cannot be kept nice and tight in a box. The more that something is kept in a box, the more it will break out of the very contraption that people will try to trap it in.
I would not be surprised is Christian Hip-Hop will break out soon. Why no Gospel radio station is trying to program a regular block of Christian Hip-Hop into their schedule is beyond me. Lord knows it will break up the monotony of Choirs, Fred Hammond and Mary Mary.
Anyway, I said all of that to say that it is silly to squabble over a Bible translation unless that version of the Bible is blatantly off. In other words, if the King James, Living, Amplified and New International versions says “thou shalt not kill,” and one version says “kill kill kill,” I would suggest not using that version of the Bible.
