ARLINGTON, Va. – I know, I have not been writing on here for a while. I promise I will do a better job…especially since Maryland Politics Today is no more.

Anyway, I needed to get on here to mark a couple of milestones….

1. I have been living in Baltimore for one year. I know I’m in the county and not the city, but Baltimore has been my home for the past year.

2. 15 years ago this month, the hip surgery that came from growing too fast took place. I do not know what happened to those pins that were in my hip for about six months, but if I come across them, I will post them.

Happy August to you all and stay tuned; The first of many Oldies parties will be taking place soon.

I am what you would call a non-traditional student. I started college right after high school, but took some time off before starting again a few years ago. Not only did I start my first semester at Towson this past fall, I also transferred my math credit back to Anne Arundel Community College, where I earned my associates degree at the age of 28. The degree came in the mail a day after I turned 29.

Due to the interesting position I am in, I thought I would explore the possibility of reaching out to other students like myself. The only problem is that I was told that Towson University has not had a non-traditional student group in years. A quick search of the school website turns up only one page for non-traditional students, which is completely full of self help links.

Being a non-traditional student is not easy, especially when you are more than likely supporting yourself and paying for school at the same time. Due to the current state of the economy, the non-traditional student ranks are growing. I would encourage the administration of this school to re-evaluate how it reaches out to non-traditional students like myself. While 18-22 year olds are desired; non-traditional students can balance a campus community by sharing the real world experience that we endured while not in a classroom. To dismiss real world experience for the sake of the college experience is in my view intellectually dishonest.

This letter was originally submitted to The TowerLight, but they chose not to publish it…so I published it here on my blog. No hard feelings…honestly.

Before I continue, I just want to say that I cannot stand Ann Coulter. She is a detriment to the conservative side of the argument who goes for the shock rather than the point. I refuse to read her books because she has not proven that she can make her point without being over the line insulting. With that said, I also would like to point out that I am a big lover of intellectual honesty, something that liberals have yet to get a grasp on. Both are illustrated in this clip as I give credit to Ann Coulter for not only making a valid point, but calling out the Rev. Al Sharpton on his hypocrisy.

The fact of the matter is that Coulter is absolutely correct in stating that if Sen. Harry Reid of Nevada was a Republican, Sharpton would be calling for his resignation, and would not stop calling for Reid’s resignation until it happened. In fact, I think when compared to now former Senator Trent Lott (R-MS), Reid is getting off light. Lott said that America would be a better place had Strom Thurmond (who was a Democrat until 1964 for the record) would had been better if he was elected President in 1948. Still a stupid thing to say considering that Thurmond was running as a segregationist. What Reid said was a lot worse, nevermind the fact that he used the overly outdated term, “Negro.”

Allow me to take this time to publicly say that if you are a Black voter, pay attention to the double standard being applied to the Democrat party. Reid is basically getting a pass on what you would not tolerate from a Republican. If it was John McCain who said that Obama had no Negro dialect and is favorable as a light-skinned candidate, you would scream for bloody murder. If that doesn’t insult you, how about the fact that President Obama is brushing the whole incident aside as is Sharpton?

Let’s look at the two statements from these two gentlemen:

Al Sharpton is a statement (from POLITICO):

“While there is no question that Senator Reid did not select the best word choice in this instance, these comments should not distract America from its continued focus on securing healthcare or creating jobs for its people.”

In the meantime, Mr. Obama said (from MSNBC):

“He has apologized recognizing that he didn’t use appropriate language, but there was nothing mean spirited in what he had to say and he has always been on the right side of the issues. And the fact that we spend days of this instead of talking about the unemployment rate or talking about how we deal with critical issues like energy and health care is an indication of why I think people don’t understand what is happening in Washington.”

Mr. Obama…Rev. Sharpton. People understand what is happening in Washington. That is why they are uniting and attending tea party rallies and jamming the phone lines and inbox on Capitol Hill. What reasonable people do not understand is why are you and Sharpton trying to brush this away because Reid happens to agree with you ideologically.

This is not the first time that Democrats have sidestepped their own hypocrisy when it comes to race relations. Then again, what would you expect from a party that was active in the KKK. NAACP Chairman Julian Bond does have a point when he said Jim Crow became James Crow, Esquire. The only problem is that he fails to see that no matter the pedigree of Mr. Crow, he is still a Democrat, but I digress.

As I pointed out last year, Democrats are more than willing to attack Blacks who do not step inline with the liberal ideology, and Black Democrats are more than willing to defend their White counterparts in racist attacks. Maryland State Senator Lisa Gladden (D-Baltimore) said that party trumps race; which would probably explain why she gave a pass to her colleague Thomas Mike Miller (D-Calvert) who said at one point that current RNC Chairman Michael Steele was the personification of an Uncle Tom.

If you are Black and/or a registered Democrat, I would take a step back and take the whiff of the blatant and open hypocrisy coming from your party’s leadership. If you have seen the movie “The Truman Show,” think about the scenes where one person was trying to reveal the truth to Truman, the people who were in the know did their best to cover up the truth so Truman would not have a clue of what is going on. This is the exact same thing and you would be foolish to buy the bag of goods that Obama, Sharpton and any other leader in the Democrat party was trying to pass.

On Monday, August 30, 1999, I began my trek towards higher learning at Prince George’s Community College…then a bunch of stuff happened. At some point in 2003/2004, I decided to move everything college related to Anne Arundel Community College. When I first moved to Laurel, I was living in the Anne Arundel County side so that made sense. Little did I know, I was going to wind up back in Prince George’s County. I still kept my stuff at AACC because I thought it was a better school for me than PGCC (it was and it is.) Through highs and lows beginning with the Summer 2005 through the Summer 2009 semester, I stuck to it as best as I knew how.

As many of you know, I recently started the next phase of my undergraduate career at Towson University in Towson, Maryland. For those who are not familiar with Maryland, it’s directly north of Baltimore. I had left AACC, three credits shy of getting my Associates…math. I signed up for basic general math, the one I should have signed up for in hindsight at AACC instead of statistics. I’m still asking what I was thinking in picking that subject, but that is a moot point. I have earned my math credits.

So in short, ten years after I started college, I am getting my Associates of Arts degree from Anne Arundel Community College for the Fall 2009 semester; which is allowing me to continue on and get the monkey I had on my back for a long long time. Now let’s get down to the bare bones of this. I THANK GOD FOR HELPING ME AND ALLOWING ME TO GET THIS FAR. At first, I was not happy that I took this long to get any sort of degree. When I received notice that I would be officially graduating this past Friday I started thinking about what has happened to me over the past decade.

As the song that I heard in church this morning said, “All I know is what God told me.” In addition, all I know that there have been people that have been praying for me, even when I was tripping. If you are one of those people, my sincerest thanks from the bottom of my heart. There have been times that I actually wanted to give up and ask what was the point. But then I would remember the dreams I had when I was younger. I would remember growing up and making TV sets out of legos. I would also remember joining every student news outlet that I could.

There was also a time where I actually entertained a career in computers in high school. The field was very popular and very lucrative in the late 1990s. Then I remember the fun and the joy that I had from writing. From that point, I never looked back. When I attended nightwatch services going into this year, the preacher touched a nerve when he talked about when the only thing I had left was faith. That was more true than people probably realize. Now, that I have been blessed with this degree, I have even more of a fire to do what I believe I am called to do.

This weekend, which is the annual “Selfish Celebration of Life”, it has been re-dubbed this year as the “Selfish Celebration of Life and Success.” You are probably asking yourself, why am I calling it a selfish celebration. Let’s be honest, this weekend, those who were invited, are getting together to celebrate ME getting older and ME graduating. If that is not selfish, I don’t know what is.

Thank you all for the well wishes, those who have contacted me so far and God Bless you all.

This is one of those things that I had to see for myself; Brit Hume on Fox News Sunday suggesting to Tiger to take up Christianity. Could you blame me? Usually when you hear about someone suggesting turning to Jesus as one’s savior, the news travels fast to the point that people want to scream red. So when I watched the video of what Brit said I wondered…

I wondered what was so bad about what Hume said considering that he is now paid to give his opinion. He said that he does not believe that Buddhism offers the type of forgiveness and redemption that Christianity offers. Let me said that first part again: HE SAID HE DOES NOT BELIEVE. Hume was not speaking as an authority on Buddhism, he simply stated his belief. He didn’t come off hard to me; he spoke with warmth and honesty. He also said that he would tell Tiger to join the Christian faith. In no way did I hear in Hume’s voice that he required Tiger to change. But alas, Hume touched the third rail in the talk on religion, asking someone to call Jesus Christ their personal Lord and savior.

Hume had to know that he was playing with fire. For those of you who are biblically inclined, let’s talk about what Hume did for starters. He presented the gospel (albeit in a short burst of a 40 second sound bite) specifically talking about repentance. In Luke 24:47 (NLT), Jesus told his disciples to “take this message to all the nations.” Allow me to give Brit Hume credit for putting aside journalism for a minute to be a human and give his personal insight and take on a tragic situation involving the world’s greatest golfer.

Now that third rail, if Hume is a regular Bible reader, he had to know about John 15:20, 2 Timothy 1:8 and 1 Peter 4:19; scriptures that discuss persecution for the gospel’s sake. I can’t think of any better form of persecution than from those who are currently criticizing Brit Hume, which includes Keith Olbermann comparing Hume to Islamic Extremists. A criticism that I think is absolutely way off, Mr. Olbermann.

I can understand why everyone would fly off the handle, but looking at the video and breaking down what Hume said, I don’t think it’s that bad. He simply presented the option and his opinion, which he prefaced by saying two words, “I believe.”

...and Happy Holidays too!

I will be the first person to tell you that the “War on Christmas” is not imaginary. It is very real. In fact I remember me and a friend going to Target around this time four years ago and we saw a “Holiday Tree” as opposed to a Christmas Tree. At which point I turned to her and asked, “When did you guys have a tree for Chaunukkah growing up?” I think Target didn’t want to hear it this year because they have big “Marry Christmas” signs hanging all over the store.

Overall, I would not say that it is so much a war on Christmas, more than it is a war on Christianity as a whole. Looking at everyday media, you have people lining up to defend the rights of Muslims, Sikhs, Buddhists, Atheists, Agnostics, et cetera. Let someone speak up for the rights of Christians, you will get chided as the days are long.

Christians are the only openly ridiculed in public and the media. President Obama has openly displayed of intolerance/ignorance of Christianity. We have since witnessed and heard the clips of him ridiculing the Bible and peoples beliefs in God. Mr. Obama is not the only “President” to ridicule the Bible based on ignorance. Martin Sheen in his role on “The West Wing” had a similar rant. Whether Sheen actually believed what was written for him is not at question, but the writer of that episode certainly seems to be completely ignorant to write such a thing. Had “President” Bartlet had wrote something similar only with the Koran, there would be an uproar.

Whenever conservatives point out Muslim extremists, liberals not only point out Christian extremists, but they use them as a poster child for all Christians, while at the same time not being “open” about counter viewpoints. Then again, they aren’t really that open as AfroCity Brown had pointed out recently. She also made another great point recently:

Sure, we should accommodate everyone. But why should I give up my right to say Merry Christmas in order to do that? Why should my identity as a Christian be denied?

Here is the problem. Christians are looked on as hypocritical…and for the most part its true (sad as it sounds.) Don’t think I wasn’t going to address it. It’s one thing to be wrong, but it’s a completely thing to be wrong and then not acknowledge it. It’s one thing to be a Christian outside of the corner office, but the scenario changes when you go into your corner office and not practice any semblance of Christian character.

Everyone loves throwing around the scripture “Judge not, lest ye be judged” when they are doing the dirt, yet they will go around as judge jury and executioner on other people. How can you talk about other people and not acknowledge your dirt? The bible also says take the spear out of your eye before pointing out someone’s nail.

At the same time, there are hypocritical Jews, Muslims, and so on. Anyone that openly does not practice what they preach without remorse is a hypocrite.

Christians seem to be the only group that has to change it’s ways and modify it’s marriage by force of government. Why would the recent expansion of the hate crimes act needed to be left open for interpretation, while at the same time expanding coverage to people who practice homosexuality? As broad as the law is, and as opportunistic some activist lawyers are, anyone who says that they are against homosexuality could be charged with a hate crime.

Christians are the only group that says that practicing homosexuality is a sin (for the most part, I know there are a few denominations that have chosen to ignore parts of the Bible.) In the meantime, homosexuality is a sin if you are Muslim, Jewish, Hindu or most other religions, if not all. Keep in mind; I am only mentioning homosexuality as an example.

When Christians stand on their principals, they are called often called narrow minded. I actually spent time thinking about why. Christianity, when actually practiced in full not in part, has standards. You can just have sex with anyone (only between man and woman as husband and wife), you cannot kill, you cannot steal, and you cannot lie.

If you do anything outside of the above mentioned acts, the world will call you a hypocrite. But what the world doesn’t know or recognize is that Christians know that God himself knew that we were going to mess-up; hence why 1 John 1:9 is in the Bible. Also remember my definition of a hypocrite from earlier.

So the war on Christmas is very much real, but it’s apart of a larger war on Christianity, thanks to a group of people who either cannot grasp the simple message of the Gospel or because they want to do whatever they want.

However, I will still say Happy Holidays. Christmas, Chanukkah and New Year’s are more than one holiday. I will still say Merry Christmas and Happy Chanukkah and Happy New Year, but please to not lambaste me for throwing in a Happy Holidays every now and then.

For the past couple of months, I have been slowly (but surely) putting together my multi-media side gig, the name of my company is “The Maryland News Company.” Obviously, this is being founded on my strong journalism background, although I will try to move into other areas, such as consulting.

I have had my domain for the company: themdnews.com for a couple of months, but didn’t know what I want to do with it. I thought about starting another blog, but I can only manage two (this one and Maryland Politics Today.)

I already have the hardware established at home (minus the ISDN line, I do have skype though). Since I completed building my studio last year, I have produced newscasts for national syndication from my house, in addition to radio programs for national syndication and news stories for WNAV-AM.

I will let you know when the new site is for my company is established.

But in the meantime, what are you looking for in a multi-media company.
